Blog Assignment #7

The Networked Student by Wendy Drexler was a very interesting video to watch. It was about a student who doesn't attend a regular school, he goes to class 3 days a week, and 2 online. This type of education is called connectivism. Connectivism is the theory of learning from social connection and ties. A lot of what the student learns is from researching the Internet, and it teaches the student to take control of their learning. The student looks up articles about psychology and writes his own opinion about what he is learning. With this type of learning the student can find information about any topic any time of day.

While watching this video, it makes me wonder what is the teacher's role? If the student gets stuck, or if they come across articles that have a bunch of different opinions. The teacher can help the student sort out the correct information, and help the student find better information on the topic. This type of learning lets the student learn at their own pace, and not sit and follow boring lectures. With all the technology available the student can access lectures from schools such as Cambridge, and Berkley.

Even though this method teaches the students to be more independent with their learning, the students still need teachers. Aside from helping students as needed, they are also responsible for teaching them proper online communication, and organizational skills. If the students don't learn how to do this the correct way, they can't communicate properly with other students. I like the idea of networking and I feel that know matter what technology you throw into the classroom, there will always be a need for teachers

I found this video so neat. The student's have so many buttons on their computers. The buttons will take you to so many places, and you can research so many things. I like how it keeps track of where the student gets their information so they can receive credit for their work. It teaches student's responsibility and gives them the knowledge they need at their fingertips. The freedom to explore gives them the chance to find out things on their own.

  1. I enjoyed reading your blog . You summarized and stated ideas that I found interesting. However, I think the coherence and conciseness could have been better.

"It was about a student who doesn't attend a regular school, he goes to class 3 days a week, and 2 online."

I understood what you was saying, but someone without prior knowledge may have not.

I would have phrased it like this:

It was about a student who goes to school three days a week. Out of the three days two are online.

Misplaced word know instead of no.

"I like the idea of networking and I feel that know matter what technology you throw into the classroom, there will always be a need for teachers"

In conclusion, you may want to edit and proof-read after writing. You understand the material and have great ideas. It is just the process of putting it all together. Keep up the good work!

  2. Anna,

I'd like to give a shout-out to the fantastic comment that Samuel left prior to my comment! He has perfectly illustrated how to use the Comment Sandwich effectively. You should be proud that you received a comment that good. (Seriously.) Now, time for my comment.

For some reason, you have "The Networked Student" intruding upon the integrity of this sentence: "The teacher can help the student sort out the correct information,The Networked Student and help the student find better information on the topic." I think you must have copied and pasted part of this sentence and somehow "The Networked Sentence" got caught up in the mix.

Also, your last paragraph about the PLE is very vague and repetitive. SO MANY SO's: "so neat," "so many buttons," "so many places," "so many things." And twice in that paragraph you make what should be plural "students" into a possessive singular student with "student's." You may want to review apostrophe rules. Purdue OWL is a great resource for everything writing related.
